Even favorites make mistakes. And their opponents are waiting to take advantage. We’ll predict whose strengths will prove decisive and whose struggles will make the highlights again.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa, Premier League, November 8

Are Manchester United back? Matheus Cunha scored twice as United came from 2–0 down to beat Roma 3–2 in the Champions League. Their nine-game winless streak is now behind them. But they have conceded first in four straight games.

Against Aston Villa, they’d better avoid falling behind again: comebacks don’t happen on demand. Even when trailing 3–0 against Barcelona, the Birmingham side threatened on the counterattack. The hosts need not only aggression in attack but also focus in defense.

Our prediction: Manchester United to win – odds of 2.152.

Atlético de Madrid vs Barcelona, La Liga, November 8

Barcelona have scored 46 goals in 11 league games. Atlético have conceded only eight. The Madrid defenders clearly didn’t sign up to be spectators.

Top spot is on the line: the hosts trail by two points. After the 3–0 win over Aston Villa, Hansi Flick praised how his team defended as a unit. But without the injured Rodri, everything could change.

For Diego Simeone, this is a chance to capitalize on the visitors’ losses of possession in midfield. Especially since the Catalan side also has plenty of personnel problems in defense. Midfielders Frenkie de Jong and young Brian Fariñas have already been deployed there. The forwards are on alert.

In this clash between the league’s best defense and best attack, we’re backing a draw at 4.24.

Napoli vs Lazio, Serie A, November 8

Lazio have won nine of their ten Serie A matches and collected 28 points. How are Gennaro Gattuso’s critics feeling now? Napoli have exactly half as many points. But Max Allegri has the full support of the club’s management.

Kevin De Bruyne is already training with the team. His passing could sharpen their attack. But first, they need to defend the area just outside their box better. Napoli lost 2–0 to Juventus. Both goals came from long-range shots. Giving opponents that much room to shoot is practically charity.

Our prediction: Lazio to win – 3.16.

Inter vs Como, Serie A, November 8

After a 3–1 derby loss, Inter beat Feyenoord 3–0 in the Champions League. Cristian Chivu praised the team’s organization. Now Como will put that to the test. They have won four straight Serie A games and sit just two points behind the reigning champions.

In the second leg of April’s Coppa Italia semifinal, Cesc Fàbregas’s team led 2–0 at the Giuseppe Meazza until the 69th minute. But then they conceded three goals in 20 minutes and lost 3–2.

The visitors know how to cause problems for Inter. But the hosts have already shown how to punish Como for a late collapse.

Our prediction: Inter to win – 1.765.

Valencia vs Real Madrid, La Liga, November 7

Valencia won for the first time under Javier Aguirre, beating Elche 1–0. Put the confetti away: next up are Real Madrid. The hosts have scored eight goals in 11 league games, while the visitors have scored 28. A shootout seems like a bad idea.

Last time out, Racing tried to win possession high up the pitch. Madrid handled that pressure and won 3–0.

So it’s risky for Valencia to throw everyone forward. They’d be better off defending closer to their own goal and looking for chances on the counterattack. Even that might not be enough.

Our prediction: Real Madrid to win – 1.315.
